Dow Jones only gainer Friday, advances 211 points

NEW YORK, New York — The Dow Jones advanced on Friday, while the Nasdaq Composite and Standard and Poor’s 500 lost ground. A major fall in Netflix undermined the technology sector, while a rise in American Express based on a better earnings result than expected, helped push up the Dow.

"You’ve seen rate-cutting expectations just continue to come out of the market, and they should be because there’s nothing about the data that says they should cut," Mike Dickson, head of research and quantitative strategies at Horizon Investments in Charlotte, North Carolina told Reuters Friday.

"So in that environment when you’re sitting here near highs, that means it’s not going to be rates going down and multiples expanding because of that, that has to be driven by earnings growth. And so just the more the rate picture doesn’t look super-favorable for lower rates, even more important is the earnings growth picture."

Here’s a recap of Friday’s closing quotes for the key indices:

S&P 500 (^GSPC): The Standard and Poor’s 500 index closed at 4,967.23, marking a decline of 43.89 points or 0.88 percent.

Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI): The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed positively at 37,986.40, up by 211.02 points or 0.56 percent.

NASDAQ Composite (^IXIC): The NASDAQ Composite index on Friday experienced a major downturn, closing at 15,282.01, with a decrease of 319.49 points or 2.05 percent.

These movements underscore the nuanced dynamics at play in the stock market, with investors assessing a range of factors including corporate earnings reports, economic indicators, and geopolitical tensions.

Market participants continue to closely monitor developments both domestically and globally, adjusting their strategies accordingly to navigate the evolving landscape. As trading resumes in the upcoming week, attention will remain focused on key economic data releases and geopolitical events that could influence market sentiment and drive further movements in stock prices.
